Magnetic Mattress: Magnet Therapy – Arthritis & Fibromyalgia

I sleep on a magnetic mattress, a magnetic pillow, and underneath a comforter that has not only magnet therapy but infrared and negative ion as well. I have heard most of the jokes and comments about being a “magnet man”, and fielded most of the questions concerning magnet therapy. Today I will attempt to tell you why you owe it to yourself to become a magnet man or woman!

First the reasons why. I have no health problems of my own, thankfully. Most of the information out there has to do with magnet therapy and how persons with various health challenges respond to them. I and I’m sure “you” are most interested in clinical trials on a magnetic mattress and their results. I offer these clinical studies for you to consider for various health challenges.

1.) Arthritis
In 1997, Dr. Carlos Valbona of the Baylor College of Medicine, published a study that reported 76% of treated patients using permanent magnet therapy reported a decrease in arthritis joint and muscle pain compared to 19% of placebo patients.

In December 2002, Ganesan K, Gengadharan AC, Balachandran C, Manohar BM, Puvanakrishnan R.
Department of Biotechnology, Central Leather Research Institute, Adyar, Chennai 600 020, India.Arthritis refers to more than 100 disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The existing pharmacological interventions for arthritis offer only symptomatic relief and they are not definitive and curative. Magnet therapy has been known from antiquity and it is evolved to the present times with the advent of electromagnetism. The original basis for the trial of magnet therapy is the interaction between the biological systems with the natural magnetic fields. The analysis of various studies (animal models of arthritis, cell culture systems and clinical trials) reporting the use of PEMF (Magnetic Field) for arthritis cure has conclusively shown that PEMF not only alleviates the pain in the arthritis condition but it also affords chondroprotection, exerts antiinflammatory action and helps in bone remodeling and this could be developed as a viable alternative for arthritis therapy.

2.) Fibromyalgia:
Magnetic Mattress Pad Use in Patients with Fibromyalgia, A Randomized Double-blind Pilot Study, conducted by Agatha P. Colbert, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA. Conclusions were “Sleeping on a magnetic mattress pad provides statistically significant and clinically relevant pain relief and sleep improvement in subjects with Fibromyalgia. No adverse reactions were noted during the 16-week trial period.”

University of Virginia HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Alan P. Alfano, Medical Director – Data were compiled for 94 fibromyalgia patients randomly divided into four groups. “…we did find a statistically significant difference in pain intensity reduction for one of the active magnet mattress groups. The two groups that slept on pads with magnet therapy generally showed the greatest improvements in outcome scores of pain intensity level, number of tender points on the body and functional status after six months.” “To our knowledge, no other studies on magnet therapy have been done in as rigorous a clinical setting as U.Va., and this study was the largest conducted so far,” said Ann Gill Taylor, R.N., Ed.D., co-investigator for the study. “Nevertheless, larger studies are needed to find clear answers about magnets’ safety and efficacy in treating pain.”

3.) Pain
A single 45 min treatment with 300-500G reduced pain in post-polio patients by 76%. Interestingly, the magnets were placed on pain trigger points and not directly on the pain site. In another study discoloration, edema and pain were reduced by 40-70% over 7 days post suction lipectomy. A.A. Pilla. Department of Biomedical Engineering, Columbia University, New York; Department of Orthopedics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, USA.

SMF (static magnetic field) therapy significantly improves disability and may reduce pain when active magnets are worn continuously for 4 weeks in patients with CPP (chronic pelvic pain), but blinding efficacy is compromised. (Am J Obstet Gynecol 2002;187:1581-7.) Candace S. Brown, PharmD,a Frank W. Ling, MD,b Jim Y. Wan, PhD,c and Arthur A. Pilla, PhDd Memphis, Tenn, and New York, NY

Summary of a 12-month, double-blind, clinical test of magnetic mattress pads carried out by San-ikukai Hospital, Tokyo Communications Hospital and Kouseikai Suzuki Hospital, by Dr. Kazuo Shimodaira. Dr. Shimodaira’s conclusion of this year-long study conducted in 3 of Japan’s foremost hospitals: “The magnetized health mattress pad is proved to be effective on neck and shoulder pain, back and lower back pain, back pain, lower limb pain, insomnia, and fatigue, and to have no side effects.” I refer you to an article “Sleeping on a Magnetic Mattress Pad“.

The FDA has allows magnet mattress claims to be made for general pain-relief and won’t object to the following assertions about a magnetic mattress:

* It may reduce bone, joint and muscle pain,
* It improves circulation and
* It promotes relaxation

As you can see even the FDA has had to allow that magnet therapy does work. In Japan and other Asian countries, magnets are licensed as medical devices. Magnetic therapy is routinely used in Australia, Russia and many European countries. In Germany medical insurance will cover some of the costs. With all the mounting evidence of the effectiveness of a magnetic mattress pad on the treatment of pain and various health challenges one wonders why people continue to chose to suffer. Folks will spend more money on a dining room table that many hardly ever sit at other than holidays than they do on the environment they spend a full 1/3 of their lives.

My Magnet Mattress

I sleep on a magnetic mattress from a Japanese company called Nikken. I also market the Nikken Mattress on my website. In order to give folks a chance to experience sleeping in this environment at a great price I have entered a discount code that will give you an additional 20% discount when you buy a complete sleep system. The code is 012011 and will only be good till the end of January. Just enter the code at checkout. I hope you find great relief sleeping in our sleep system. Let me know what you think!

til next time,

    Fantastic website you have here but I was wanting to know if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics talked about in this article? I’d really love to be a part of group where I can get comments from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Cheers!

  2. I’ve been using this type of mattress and all I can say is that this stuff works! I have slept better and had a healthier. One great product!

  3. Sleeping on a Magnetic mattress pad has benefits. One of the benefits is it radiates a soothing sleep field that may help improve circulation and increase the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream.

  4. Barnlofter, I belive that these things work very well but like with everything alternative there is always going to be sceptisism as to the truth and science behind these things. You are lucky to do what you feel is right and benefit from it no matter what they say right now at the lab 🙂 Thanks for the post, Lisa
