Polk Salad Gary
Pokeweed is also known as poke, pokebush, pokeberry, pokeroot, polk salad, polk salat, polk sallet, inkberry or ombú. It’s scientific name is Phytolacca, which is from two Greek words that mean plant, and dye. It is a perennial plants native to North America, South America, East Asia and New Zealand.
It was used by Indians for it’s medicinal properties which included the use of the berries for arthritis and a tincture made from the roots to boost the immune system. The Amish also are know to use this plant for these afflictions. Today it is viewed more as a nuisance weed. Makes you wonder what else is right here around us everyday that could be useful yet we know nothing of.
